how we train…
-
DEVELOPMENTAL // GREEN (GR)
New swimmers that can demonstrate competency in at least 2 of 4 strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly) and are brand new to competitive swimming.
Our focus is on developing basic technique and refinement of strokes.
Our goals are to gain competency in all 4 strokes while having fun, creating new friendships, and move to Bronze.
Swimmers tend to be between 6-9 years of age.
Practices - 2x/week @ 60-75 mins/day
-
DEVELOPMENTAL // BRONZE (BR)
Amateur swimmers who can demonstrate competency in all 4 strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly) and are fairly new to competitive swimming.
Our focus is to continue developing technique and refinement of strokes, as well as conditioning.
Our goals are to gain the skills necessary to begin competing in swim meets at the C, B, and A level and move to Silver.
Swimmers tend to be between 7-10 years of age.
Practices - 2-3x/week @ 75-90 mins/day
-
AGE GROUP // SILVER (SI)
Intermediate swimmers who are building endurance and improving technique in all 4 strokes and may have some competitive swimming experience.
Our focus is to incorporate more techniques (starts, turns, and underwaters) that are built on a solid swimming foundation.
Our goals are to steadily compete in swim meets at the A and A+ level and move to Gold.
Swimmers tend to be between 8-11 years of age.
Practices - 3-4x/week @ 90-120 mins/day
-
AGE GROUP // GOLD (GO)
Strong swimmers who continue to increase their aerobic base and conditioning, refine their skills and technique, and usually have 2 or more years of competitive swimming.
Our focus is to introduce new concepts (distance and race strategy) while incorporating more age group specific workouts (wetland and dryland), as well as stretching and recovery.
Our goals are to regularly compete in swim meets at the invitational and state level and move to Junior.
Swimmers tend to be between 9-12 years of age.
Practices - 5x/week @ 120 mins/day; Dryland - 1-2x/week
-
ELITE // JUNIOR (JR)
Advanced swimmers who continue to perfect their technique and race strategy and tend to have 4 or more years of competitive swimming.
Our focus is to increase endurance and power through workout interval and intensity (both in and out of the water) with additional time spent on strength training, stretching, recovery, and nutrition.
Our goals are to consistently compete at the state level, while also starting to earn regional cuts, and move to Senior.
Swimmers tend to be 13 years or older.
Practices - 5-6x/week @ 120 mins/day; Dryland and Strength Training - 1-2x/week
-
ELITE // SENIOR (SR)
Elite swimmers who have given their complete commitment to the sport and have 6 or more years of competitive swimming.
Our focus is to maximize endurance and power by pushing the limits of strength training and swim interval and intensity. Programing is tailored specifically to the individual athlete’s body type and mechanics with stroke specialization and mental training also incorporated.
SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) goals are set and the athlete is expected to compete at the national level (regionals, sectionals, futures, and junior nationals) while also realizing scholarship opportunities from D1, D2, and D3 universities.
Swimmers tend to be 15 years or older.
Practices - 6x/week @ 120 mins/day; Dryland and Strength Training - 2-3x/week

say aloha to the kokua krew…
-
Robert Sonny Lessary - President
Robert has 3 boys at AAA…Makana (17 - senior), Kala’i (11 - silver), and La’akea (10 - bronze).
When not selling acoustic, ceiling, or insulation building materials as a small business owner, he loves hanging out at three tables with his fam (and dog) or trying to keep the garage clean (which he says is a losing battle).
-
Erin Sare - Registrar
Erin has 2 kids at AAA, Oakley (17 - senior) and Skye (7 - bronze), and is a pediatric nurse when not running the kids all over the island as an unpaid Uber driver.
She’s not sure how being a runner most her life got her so deep in the swimming world but it probably comes from her love of water sports (water skiing, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and open water shark dives).
-
Michelle Bir - Treasurer
Michelle has 1 of 4 kids, Amelia (11 - gold), at AAA and is a freelance photojournalist that just got picked up by the Associated Press (kind of a big deal if you ask us).
She’s independently published 2 books and a magazine, with a third book in the works now, and is a lifelong athlete that started distance swimming about 5 years ago. She’s also a micro-farmer, working with local non-profits to deliver produce to food insecure areas.
-
Nadine Yoneda - Secretary
Nadine has 2 girls with 1, Little Chloe (11 - silver), swimming for Aloha a little over a year now.
Her attention to detail and organizational skills come from her full time gig in budgeting and when she’s not cheering on the team or chauffeuring both girls to various activities, she’s hanging out near water with the fam or lost in a great book.
-
Kristen Hirota - Fun Maker
Kristen is a mama of 2 with Rysten (15 - junior) swimming for AAA and works at the happiest place on-island (any guesses where that could be?!).
When not taking photos or planning parties at the full time gig, she’s taking photos and planning parties…for us, lol!
-
Ed Cua - Fun(d) Raiser
Ed is a father of 3 with Matteo (11 - gold) swimming for Aloha and his other two already in college.
When not being a Fun(d) Raiser, he’s living the dream…working, living, and surfing on the North Shore (with his wife Laura) and cooking up a ton of food to keep up with Matteo’s big appetite.
-
Abby Apana - Kokua Krew
Abby is the proud mama of 1 with Evan (11 - gold) swimming for Aloha since 2024.
When she’s not running around shuttling him between Kamehameha Schools, triathlon practice, hula, and swim, she somehow finds the time to help AAA manage our Kokua Krew…making sure they’re timing, tenting, and volunteering at our many meets and events throughout the year.
-
Ashley Myers - Safety Sis
Ashley is a mom of 2 boys, with Lincoln (11 - gold) swimming for AAA.
She is a first-grade teacher, constantly surrounded by crayons, questions, and contagious giggles and finds balance (and a bit of sanity) through running, lifting, and strong coffee.
Her summers are spent visiting family on the mainland, exploring the outdoors, or unwinding with a good book in hand.
bid a hui hou to our high school seniors…

proud to be team speedo…
As the world's leading swimwear brand, Speedo is passionate about life in and around the water.
Born on Bondi Beach, Australia in 1928, their history of innovation started when their Scottish founder, Alexander McRae, introduced the Racerback suit - the world's first non-wool suit allowing greater freedom of motion. Since then, their passion for innovation has led to more Olympic Gold Medals being won in Speedo than any other brand.
Speedo’s mission is to inspire people to swim - and to bring you the swimsuits and gear that make every moment in the water better.
